Travel insurance after 70 — where the limits hold up

Most Singapore travel policies cut their medical cover sharply once a traveller turns 70, and at least one stops selling new annual policies well before that. Every insurer in our set publishes a figure for the over-70 band, and the highest of them is five times the lowest at each insurer's top tier — so this is one of the few areas where the published table, rather than the marketing copy, shows where the policies actually diverge.

How we picked the standouts

Standouts are chosen from our cross-insurer research where this topic shows real differences between plans — see the methodology.

The standouts

Allianz Travel Protect

Keeps S$200,000 of overseas emergency medical cover for an adult aged 70 and above on its Platinum plan — the joint-third-highest published senior limit — and maintains S$1 million for emergency transportation and repatriation regardless of age.

MSIG TravelEasy Flex

Lets annual policies be renewed to age 80 — the only published renewal ceiling in the set; new annual policies can be bought up to age 69, with renewals above 70 moving to the entry-level Standard Flex plan. Its over-70 medical limit is S$100,000 on the top plan — a tenth of what the same plan pays a 69-year-old.

HL Assurance Travel Protect360

Publishes S$100,000 senior medical cover on its upper tiers, and keeps emergency evacuation unlimited on every plan — including the entry-level Basic — though Section 7 states its own ceiling and does not apply above age 80, which Section 4, Section 38 and Section 39 repeat.

Sompo Travel Insurance

Publishes an explicit over-70 band on both of its plans for medical expenses and for emergency evacuation, so the figures that apply after 70 are stated rather than read off the under-70 headline — the evacuation limit is the one to look at, because it falls with age here. Its cashless outpatient service in Japan removes the need to pay large sums upfront.

Income Travel Insurance

Publishes the highest senior limit in the set — S$500,000 on PreX Prestige for travellers aged 70 and above — on a separate Enhanced PreX product line that addresses the conditions more common with age.

"—" means this table holds nothing comparable to show for that insurer under that heading — the cover may be published and captured in a neighbouring row, or sit outside what we have captured here. It is never a statement that the benefit is excluded, and never a claim to have read the insurer's whole site and found silence.

The drop is steeper than most people expect

Where insurers publish age bands, the same policy covers a 69-year-old and a 71-year-old very differently:

Income publishes the highest senior limit in the set. Ranked by each insurer’s top tier for a traveller aged 70 and above: Income S$500,000, Singlife S$300,000, then Allianz, FWD and Great Eastern at S$200,000 each, and MSIG, Sompo, HL Assurance and Allianz Travel at S$100,000. All nine publish a figure — none is silent — and the gap between the highest and the lowest is five times. Allianz’s S$200,000 is the joint-third-highest, and it holds a 70-year-old at a fraction of the S$2,000,000 its own Platinum plan publishes for the under-70s.

What else to check

Evacuation usually bands by plan, not by age — but not always. HL Assurance publishes an unlimited evacuation limit on all four of its plans and, unlike its medical rows, attaches no age band to it — but its Section 7 states its own ceiling: it does not apply to an insured person above the age of 80, and Section 4, Section 38 and Section 39 say the same. Allianz and MSIG each publish one evacuation figure that applies to every tier, and neither varies with the traveller’s age. MSIG’s S$1,000,000 is worth reading carefully, though: it is a single ceiling shared with five other sections — compassionate and hospital visit, child guard, emergency phone, pre-existing cover and COVID-19 — so it is not S$1,000,000 of evacuation cover sitting on top of everything else. Sompo is the exception on this page: its evacuation limit is banded by age as well as by plan, and on both plans the over-70 figure sits far below the under-70 one, as the table shows. Income publishes one evacuation figure for every age band — S$500,000 on Classic and uncapped on its other five plans — so its senior row reads exactly as its under-70 row and the band changes nothing here. Where an insurer publishes a single evacuation figure with no age band, that is what it publishes — not a statement that the limit still holds at 70.

Purchase and renewal ages. MSIG publishes its cut-offs — new annual policies to 69, renewals to 80, with over-70 renewals on the Standard plan. Great Eastern publishes its own for both bases: single trips to 99, and annual multi-trip policies to 80 for new applications. Of the insurers this table compares, the other four have no cut-off to show for either, and the row above renders that as a dash.

Pre-existing conditions become the real question. Age itself isn’t what limits most older travellers — managed conditions are. That is covered separately in travelling with a pre-existing condition.

Where a cell reads “—”, this table holds nothing comparable to show for that insurer under that heading — the cover may be published and captured in a neighbouring row, or sit in a record this table does not draw on. It is never a statement that the benefit is excluded, and never a claim to have read the insurer’s whole site and found silence. Ask the insurer for the figure that applies to you.

Information only. Figures come from each insurer's published materials (linked above) and reflect the plan tier named in the column header. Not financial advice — verify with the insurer before purchase.
