Who this plan suits
- Frequent travellers to Japan
- Self-drive travellers renting cars overseas
- Travellers who fly routes with frequent short delays
Worth knowing before you buy
- Baggage loss cover is S$1,000 on both plans — the lowest overall baggage limit in our set; on top-tier plans the next lowest is S$5,000 and the rest run from S$7,500 to S$10,000. source: sompo.com.sg · verified 2026-08-15
- Overseas medical drops to S$50,000–S$100,000 for travellers aged 70 and above. source: sompo.com.sg · verified 2026-08-31
- Skiing and snowboarding are covered on-piste and without a licensed guide or instructor — off-piste is outside that description. The other activities carry conditions of their own that decide whether a claim is paid — scuba diving is covered only for leisure diving where the insured holds a PADI certification or similar and dives with a certified buddy or a qualified instructor, to no deeper than 30 metres or the certification limit, whichever is shallower, and trekking only below 3,500 metres, on a route open to the public, run by a recognised operator or under licensed guides. source: sompo.com.sg · verified 2026-08-15
Sompo’s travel cover is built around practical friction points rather than headline limits. Its medical ceiling (S$500,000 on Superior) is the lowest in our set, but one benefit is genuinely hard to find elsewhere, and two more are worth knowing about for what they pay rather than for being rare.
The rare one is for travellers to Japan: a cashless outpatient service means walking into a participating clinic without paying up front and claiming later. Rental vehicle excess cover is not rare — every other insurer we cover sells it — but Sompo’s runs to S$3,000 on Superior and S$2,000 on Essential, and it names windshield and tyre damage explicitly, at S$500 and S$200. Those two are alternatives to the excess claim rather than additions to it: the section pays one claim per trip, and it pays for a windscreen or a tyre only where no excess claim has been made. And lounge access triggers at 60 minutes of delay, the lowest threshold we found and low enough to apply to ordinary delays rather than only serious disruptions; it is a value-added service rather than a policy benefit, and MSIG’s Travel Easy page offers lounge access too, so it is not something that sets this policy apart.
Delay benefits also pay for a delay while you are in Singapore: S$150 for a delay of more than six hours (S$50 for a child), paid once. Baggage delay pays at the Singapore end too, but on a different trigger — the wording requires the baggage to be delayed arriving in Singapore, where the travel-delay benefit does not say on arrival.
The clear weak spot is baggage. At S$1,000 overall it is the lowest limit in our set — on top-tier plans the next lowest is S$5,000, and most run to S$7,500 or more.
