Which travel insurers offer the highest overseas medical cover?

A hospital stay in the United States or Japan can run past six figures, which is why the overseas medical limit is the number most worth comparing. Singapore insurers differ enormously here — from S$500,000 to genuinely uncapped — and the gap widens further once you look at evacuation and follow-up treatment.

How we picked the standouts

Standouts are chosen from our cross-insurer research where this topic shows real differences between plans — see the methodology.

The standouts

Allianz Travel Protect

The largest fixed medical limit we found at S$2 million, backed by S$1 million of emergency transportation covering evacuation and medical repatriation on every tier as one benefit, and a S$10,000 search-and-rescue sublimit — which the other eight insurers in our set publish no sub-limit for.

Income Travel Insurance

Overseas medical is uncapped on the top plan, Enhanced PreX Prestige, and on Preferred — though an adult aged 70 or over is capped at S$500,000 on PreX Prestige and at S$350,000 on Preferred — and if a delay strands you past your policy end date, cover extends automatically at no charge.

Singlife Travel Insurance

Also uncapped on its top tier, with personal liability up to S$1.5 million — useful if an accident abroad involves someone else's injury or property.

FWD Travel Insurance

S$1 million of overseas medical, and emergency evacuation left uncapped on every plan tier rather than only the most expensive one — which FWD and HL Assurance are the only two insurers in our set to do. Income and Singlife also publish an uncapped evacuation limit, but on their upper plans rather than on all of them.

HL Assurance Travel Protect360

Unlimited evacuation across all four plans, including the entry-level Basic rather than the top tier alone, and it publishes a follow-up limit for treatment continuing in Singapore after you get home — S$25,000 on its top plan for an adult aged 70 or below. Four insurers publish more than that on their own top plan — Income and Singlife S$50,000, MSIG and FWD S$30,000 — and the bands differ rather than the ranking, because Singlife's S$50,000 also runs to 70 while Income's, MSIG's and FWD's stop below it and fall to between S$3,000 and S$6,000.

"—" means this table holds nothing comparable to show for that insurer under that heading — the cover may be published and captured in a neighbouring row, or sit outside what we have captured here. It is never a statement that the benefit is excluded, and never a claim to have read the insurer's whole site and found silence.

How to read these numbers

A high medical ceiling matters most where healthcare is expensive and where you are far from a hospital that can treat you. Two related benefits deserve as much attention as the headline figure:

Evacuation cover pays to move you to a facility that can treat you — an air ambulance from a remote location can cost more than the treatment itself. FWD and HL Assurance leave this uncapped on every tier; Income leaves it uncapped on all but its entry plan, where Classic pays S$500,000; and Singlife leaves it uncapped on Prestige, with S$1,000,000 on Plus and S$250,000 on Lite. Five of the nine — MSIG, Great Eastern, Allianz, Allianz Travel and Sompo — publish a S$1,000,000 cap at their top tier instead, which is usually sufficient but not always: MSIG’s S$1,000,000 is a single ceiling shared with five other sections rather than evacuation cover on top of everything else, Allianz Travel’s S$1,000,000 is flat across all three of its plans, and Sompo’s S$1,000,000 is its under-70 figure, falling to S$200,000 on Superior at 70 and above. None of the nine publishes no evacuation figure at all.

Follow-up treatment at home is the benefit travellers forget. A fracture treated abroad often needs months of care in Singapore, and all nine insurers publish an amount for it — but the amounts and the age bands differ enough that the tier matters as much as the insurer. For an adult under 70 — a band that for Singlife and HL Assurance runs to 70 inclusive — the top-plan figures run Income S$50,000 on Preferred and Enhanced PreX Prestige and Singlife S$50,000 on Prestige, then FWD S$30,000 on First and MSIG S$30,000 on Premier Flex, Great Eastern S$25,000 and HL Assurance S$25,000 on their top plans, Allianz S$10,000, Sompo S$10,000 on Superior and Allianz Travel S$2,500. The age band is the trap: the same top plans pay Income S$5,000, Great Eastern S$8,000, FWD S$6,000, Allianz S$5,000, Sompo S$2,000 and Allianz Travel S$1,250 once the traveller is 70 or over, and Singlife S$10,000 only above 70, because its S$50,000 band includes 70. All five columns below carry an amount, every one of them banded by age, so read the row plan by plan rather than at its top-tier headline.

Note that “unlimited” and “S$2 million” are practically equivalent for almost every real claim. The more consequential differences are further down the table — and, for travellers over 70, in how limits change with age.
