Cancel for any reason — comparing the fine print
Standard trip cancellation only pays for listed reasons — illness, natural disaster, a death in the family. Cancel-for-any-reason cover fills the rest, but the insurers that set a purchase deadline set different ones, and a deadline decides whether the benefit is available to you at all.
How we picked the standouts
- Whether cancel-for-any-reason cover is offered, and as standard or an add-on
- The purchase window — how the deadline relates to your booking date
- What the benefit covers beyond cancellation (postponement, curtailment, date changes)
- Standard trip cancellation limits for context
The standouts
Income Travel Insurance
States it is the only Singapore insurer allowing cancel, postpone or shorten for any reason even when the policy is bought more than 30 days after booking — removing the deadline that disqualifies most late buyers.

FWD Travel Insurance
Offers cancel-for-any-reason cover as an add-on, and pays 50% of your covered travel costs against a ceiling of S$1,000 on Premium, S$3,000 on Business and S$6,000 on First. Its purchase window is the shortest of the four published here — 7 days from your first trip deposit, against Singlife's and MSIG's 14 days and Great Eastern's 30 days from booking on Gold and Platinum — and FWD states it on its product page as well as in the wording.

Singlife Travel Insurance
Its add-on covers changing your travel date or time as well as cancelling or curtailing — useful when you want to shift a trip rather than abandon it — but it has to be bought before or within 14 days of your initial trip payment or deposit, a deadline its wording sets as a special condition of the cover and its product page repeats.

GREAT TravelCare (Great Eastern)
Covers cancellation, postponement and shortening for any reason on Gold and Platinum when the plan is bought within 30 days of your initial booking, and pays 50% of the loss — so its S$3,000 ceiling on Gold and S$6,000 on Platinum is the most a claim returns, not what the cancelled trip cost. Separately protects against your travel agent becoming insolvent.

Allianz Travel Protect
Publishes S$15,000 limits for cancellation, interruption and curtailment, and a S$15,000 trip-incident benefit for early return and extended stay — rescheduling sits inside its cancellation clause, so its wording carries no separate postponement limit. Also covers a travel agent's insolvency ending your trip.

"—" means this table holds nothing comparable to show for that insurer under that heading — the cover may be published and captured in a neighbouring row, or sit outside what we have captured here. It is never a statement that the benefit is excluded, and never a claim to have read the insurer's whole site and found silence.
The deadline is the product
Six of the insurers we cover publish a S$15,000 trip cancellation limit at their top plan — FWD, Income, MSIG, Great Eastern, Allianz and HL Assurance — while Singlife publishes the largest in the set, S$20,000 on Prestige. At the other end it is a tie: Sompo’s Superior plan and Allianz Travel’s Platinum both stop at S$10,000. So the headline number tells you almost nothing. The purchase window is what differs:
- FWD — 7 days from your initial trip deposit, the shortest of the four windows here. FWD states it on its product page and the policy wording states it again as a condition of the rider.
- Singlife — before or within 14 days of your initial trip payment or deposit, set out in its wording as a special condition of the add-on and restated on its product page.
- MSIG — within 14 days of your first booking, counted from the earliest of your tour, transport, accommodation or entertainment-ticket booking. It is sold on single trips only and pays 50% of the loss.
- Great Eastern — within 30 days of your initial travel booking, on Gold and Platinum.
- Income — no booking-date deadline: its cover applies even where the policy is bought more than 30 days after booking. Two other conditions still narrow it. Cover under that section starts 30 days after you buy the policy and within 30 days before you are due to leave Singapore, so a policy bought inside that final month gives the benefit no window to start in; and arrangements you cancel within 30 days of taking the policy up are excluded.
If you booked a trip three months ago and are buying insurance now, every window here but Income’s has closed. That single fact matters more than any limit in the table.
What “any reason” doesn’t mean
These benefits are not unconditional refunds. Common structures to check in the policy wording:
- Partial reimbursement. Some pay a percentage of unrecoverable costs rather than the full amount.
- Single trips only. FWD’s and MSIG’s versions apply to single-trip policies.
- Notice periods. Income requires cancellation within 30 days before departure, a condition its standard benefit and its cancel-for-any-reason benefit share.
- Refund first. Insurers generally require you to reclaim what you can from airlines and hotels before they pay the remainder.
