Highlights

Pre-existing conditions covered by add-on
Optional add-on covering pre-existing conditions incl. diabetes, stroke and heart disease (Gold/Platinum)
Diabetes, stroke and heart disease are the examples Great Eastern's page gives, not a list the policy defines — the wording covers claims resulting from a pre-existing condition generally, on Gold and Platinum, for an additional premium. The extension ends 45 days after the trip starts, on any trip length.

Adventure activities with a named liststands out
Leisure adventurous activities covered on Gold and Platinum; sports equipment cover on Platinum only
The wording pays for death or injury during the named activities, and each one carries its own limitations — a licensed operator throughout, qualified guides or instructors for most, rafting below Grade 4, trekking below 4,000 metres, diving no deeper than 30 metres with a PADI certificate or equivalent and a certified buddy or a qualified instructor, and winter sports on a recognised piste or a groomed and patrolled area.

Delay payouts every four hours on Platinum
Payable after each full six hours of delay on the Basic and Gold plans, or each full four hours on Platinum
The shortest interval in our set is three hours — FWD's, on its two upper plans, and HL Assurance's optional Flight Delay cover — and MSIG pays every four hours on all three of its plans, so four hours is not the earliest trigger here. What is unusual is the rate — S$100 for each of those four-hour periods, against S$100 every six hours from Income, Singlife, Allianz and Sompo. HL Assurance's rider pays faster per hour still, S$100 for each continuous three hours, and it is bought separately rather than included.

Who this plan suits

Worth knowing before you buy

Great Eastern’s travel product is GREAT TravelCare, and it is aimed at travellers who need cover for things other policies treat as exceptions: a medical history, an adventurous itinerary, or a trip longer than a month.

Pre-existing conditions can be added to the Gold or Platinum plan for an extra premium, and the wording covers claims resulting from a pre-existing condition generally — diabetes, stroke and heart disease are Great Eastern’s own examples rather than a list it defines. The add-on ends 45 days after the trip starts, so on a long trip it covers the beginning of the journey rather than all of it. Adventure activities come with a named list running from mountaineering and white-water rafting to diving with breathing apparatus and winter sports, each with its own conditions and each paying for death or injury. And a single trip can run to 182 consecutive days — the longest in our set, though four other insurers match it and the remaining four allow 180 — with one exception inside that four: Income’s Enhanced PreX plans cap a single trip at 60 days, the shortest limit here.

One caveat shapes how you should read this page: Great Eastern publishes no benefit figures on its product page. Where other insurers list their medical, baggage and cancellation limits, GREAT TravelCare describes what is covered without saying how much. We publish a figure only where we can read it in a document we hold, so the figures here come from the policy wording, whose address Great Eastern does not publish — the page says so beside each figure and names the committed copy it was read from. Get a quotation as well before you compare.
